Seoul - North Korea yesterday threatened retaliation as it accused US-backed South Korean agents of blackmailing and kidnapping a senior North Korean diplomat who was reported to have defected in Germany.

The furious threats and accusations by the communist state were an implicit admission that Mr Kim Kyong-phil, a senior economic official in North Korea's Berlin mission, was now in the hands of the US, analysts said.
