Tennis:World number two Rafael Nadal has been knocked out of the Australian Open after a masterful display from Chile's Fernando Gonzalez.
The hard-hitting South American needed little more than two hours to send Andy Murray's conqueror crashing out 6-2 6-4 6-3 in the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park.
Gonzalez had clearly taken note of the British number one's tactics on Monday and never allowed the Wimbledon finalist to settle into a rhythm with his fearsome groundstrokes.
He broke the Spaniard in the fifth game of the first set and although Nadal had a break point to strike back immediately in the next game, he was unable to capitalise, allowing the 10th seed to go on and break again to clinch the set.
Gonzalez then broke again in the first game of the second and as the rest of the set went with serve, he went 2-0 up.
Nadal was rattled and when he lost his service for the fourth time in the fifth game of what proved the final set, the game was almost up.
The Chilean had his first match point on Nadal's serve in the ninth game but the French Open champion held on to keep the match alive.
But on the second deuce Gonzalez won the point to claim his second match point and when Nadal fired a wild forehand wide of the tramline it was all over.
The world number nine will now face Germany's Tommy Haas in his first Grand Slam semi-final after his five-set victory over Nikolay Davydenko earlier today on the Rod Laver Arena.
After losing the first set, the Russian looked well set to take the match after cruising into a 2-1 sets lead, but Haas was not to be denied.
The 12th seed won the fourth easily before edging a closely-fought final set to claim a 6-3 2-6 1-6 6-1 7-5 triumph and his third Melbourne semi-final appearance.
Davydenko had a match point on Haas' serve in the 10th game of the final set but the German was eventually able to hold in confident fashion.
He then produced a fantastic game to break the third seed, clinching it with a powerful forehand to serve for the match.
A backhand into the net from the Russian handed Haas two match points. On the first, Davydenko's return was called out but he successfully challenged thanks to Hawkeye.
His joy was short-lived, however, as Haas scrambled to win the all-important point and claim a place in the last four, ensuring the Russian's record of never making it past the quarters in Australia was maintained.
