Tennis: David Ferrer produced arguably the best performance of his career to end Rafael Nadal's US Open bid. The 15th seed fought back from a set down to record a 6-7 (3/7) 6-4 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 victory in a late-night thriller on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court at Flushing Meadows.
The clock was creeping towards 2am local time when Ferrer clinched a famous win when Nadal, who flopped again at a hardcourt grand slam event, sent a lob long.
It had all started well for the second seed as he took the opening set on a tie-break, but Ferrer hit back in the second, reeling off five straight games at one stage as he clawed level.
A tight third followed and the match would hinge on another breaker at the end of it.
In it, Ferrer raced into a 3-0 lead and never sqaundered his advantage.
That crushed Nadal who called for the trainer for treatment on his hand during the fourth set.
He was unable to weather the storm as Ferrer produced some heavy hitting to more than match his compatriot from the back of the court.
The lower-ranked player constantly threatened Nadal's serve in the fourth set and soon broke through.
He quickly opened up a 5-2 lead and serving to stay in the match Nadal was unable to do so as Ferrer booked a quarter-final clash with Juan Ignacio Chela.
As for Nadal, he has still to progress past the last eight here in five attempts now.
