Navy detains British trawler off west coast

The Irish Navy has detained a British-registered trawler off the west coast on suspicion of illegal hake fishing.

The Grampian Avengerwas detained by the Irish Naval ship LE Aislingabout 100 miles west of Slyne Head.

The trawler was then escorted to Galway where a detailed inspection by Department of Marine officials is said to be under way.

A spokeswoman for the Department said the vessel was detained for breaching the regulations in regard to hake fishing and for an alleged logbook offence.
