A nephew of Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea has died in a drowning accident while holidaying in Ibiza.

Basil Bourke (21) died on the Spanish island in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A native of Hospital, Co Limerick, the Limerick Institute of Technology student was the only son of Mr O'Dea's sister Mary Bourke. He had been holidaying with five friends in Ibiza.

While precise details of the accident have not been confirmed, it is understood he was attending a disco on a boat when the incident occurred.

A spokeswoman for Mr O'Dea confirmed last night that the Minister was in Co Limerick yesterday comforting his sister and her family.

She confirmed that no foul play was suspected. Arrangements are being made by the Department of Foreign Affairs to have Mr Bourke's body flown home.
