Hanoi - Vietnam's ruling communist party put on a show of unity yesterday after months of factional feuding as it finally annointed its new leader, Nong Duc Manh, at the end of a selection process completely lacking in transparency.

The bitter rivals, who had fought tooth and nail in a power struggle which is said to have involved widespread abuse of the military intelligence services, rallied round the new leader.
