OPERA Ireland, formerly known as DGOS Opera Ireland, has announced the appointment of Mr Dieter Kaegi (39), as artistic director.

Mr Kaegi, who was born in Zurich, has previously held posts with Zurich Opera in Switzerland, the Dusseldorf company, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, in Germany and, for the last seven years, he has been director of productions at the Aix-en-Provence festival in France.

His work was first seen in Dublin in 1992, in Flotow's Martha. He later directed Mozart's Cosi fan tutte (in Dublin in 1993), and Wagner's Das Liebesverbot (at the Wexford Festival in 1994). His work has also been seen in Portugal, Canada and the United States. He is currently directing Offenbach's Barbe Bleu in Strasbourg.

Opera Ireland's forthcoming season at the Gaiety, featuring productions of Puccini's La Boheme and Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore, will run from November 27th to December 8th.

This season, as well as the forthcoming 1997 spring season, of Verdi's Macbeth and Mozart's Nozze di Figaro, are being organised under the artistic co-ordination of the company's general manager, Mr David Collopy. The first season for which Mr Kaegi will be responsible will be at the end of 1997.
