The three athletes from Niger who went missing at the end of the Special Olympics have still not been found, but neither the games' organisers nor gardaí are actively pursuing an investigation into what happened the men.

The athletes and their coach have not been seen since their disappearance at the end of June, when they failed to turn up for their flight home. The suspicion is that the four have now left the country and have most probably gone to the UK. None of the men have sought asylum here or abroad.

When contacted this week, a spokesperson for the Special Olympics said it was no longer their concern, but a matter for gardaí. The gardaí say it is a matter for the Special Olympics.

Commenting on the matter this week, the Garda Press Office said at the time of their disappearance that there was concern about the missing participants because they had special needs.

The office admitted there is no ongoing investigation into what happened the athletes and their coach, though the gardaí would welcome any further information that the public could provide.
