Nigerian authorities said yesterday they had brought rioting between Christians and Muslims in the northern city of Kaduna under control with an indefinite curfew and troops on the streets, as the death toll rose above 100.
"The situation is still tense but it has been brought under control," said Mr Tanimu Bindawa, police spokesman in Kaduna.
Most people stayed off the streets yesterday after an overnight curfew imposed on Monday was extended to an indefinite order for people to stay indoors, and as troops and heavily armed paramilitary police patrolled. The estimated death toll from the two days of religious riots rose to more than 100, with hundreds more wounded.
