No applicant responded to an advertisement by the Western Health Board for a GP position in the village of Straide, about 10 miles from Co Mayo's county town of Castlebar.
The last doctor, who had served Straide and surrounding areas, decided to move on some months ago.
Despite the health board's attempts to get a replacement GP, to date it has had no success.
The director of communications for the Western Health Board said on Wednesday that the position would be readvertised shortly.
"We have arranged for a doctor based three miles away in Foxford to cover the Straide area for the moment, but we do hope to find a replacement," said the spokesman.
"The present situation in Straide reflects the difficulties in attracting GPs into rural practices where their job is 24 hours, seven days a week."
The Fine Gael leader, Mr Enda Kenny, who is a local TD, says he has been inundated with queries about the replacement from concerned Straide residents.
