GAA:Mick O'Dwyer was nominated for the vacant football manager's post in Laois after the legendary figure confirmed he will not continue for another year with Wicklow. The 74-year-old is likely to take the rest of the summer to consider his options but is said to be keen to remain in inter-county management.

Dick Miller, former Laois county board chairman, put O’Dwyer’s name forward and was supported by Joe O’Dwyer, both of whom were involved when O’Dwyer successfully managed the county from 2003 to 2006.

"I've put Micko's name to one of the executive and I've no problem offering my support for him," said Miller.

"His record in Laois speaks for itself and we haven't been anywhere near the same level since he left. He created a great stir around the place and I reckon he'd do the same again if he came back. It needs a lift again."

"I'd welcome Micko back with open arms," added Joe O'Dwyer.

"We'd great times under him and he got an awful lot out of the players. I'd have no problem supporting him and I think it would improve Laois again if he came back.

Mick O'Dwyer, who delivered the Leinster title for Laois in 2003, declined to comment at this stage.

In Galway, manager Joe Kernan will decide in the coming days whether he is to stay on for a second season with the Tribesmen.

After a disappointing campaign the former All-Ireland winning manager with Armagh is understood to be prepared to manage the footballers for another season if the circumstances are right.

“I'd like to stay on if everything is right and we'll go ahead with it again, because I don't think the last six months gave us a true picture of what has happened here in the last nine years since Galway last won the All-Ireland,” said Kernan.

Injuries didn’t help Galway’s cause as they struggled to stay in the NFL Division One while defeats to Sligo and Wexford in the Championship brought an early end to their summer campaign.
