Queen's University Belfast has been given £4 million towards a new library by Sir Anthony O'Reilly.

Queen's University Belfast has been given £4 million towards a new library by Sir Anthony O'Reilly.

The university is planning a £42 million facility to replace the current structure, which was completed in the 1960s when just 6,000 students were enrolled.

The new library will cater for 24,000 students and should be completed by 2008 to mark the university's centenary. It will also host high-tech facilities including language services, communications technology and specialist storage for rare publications.

The £4 million includes a £2 million personal contribution from Sir Anthony, as well as £1 million each from Independent News and Media and the Ireland Funds.
