Initially it seemed as though O'Rourke had been beaten to the silver medal by Germany's Kirsten Bolm after clocking an identical time.

Bolm's name first appeared in second place on the stadium's results board. However after a delay, judges confirmed that O'Rourke had just pipped her rival who was declared third.

The move prompted the German federation to file a protest, leaving Kallur unable to celebrate her win on the podium as the medals ceremony was postponed until the dispute had been resolved.

Speaking on RTE shortly after the final, O'Rourke said, " It was absolutely unbelievable. It was such a mental run...

"I had so many people supporting me and I didn't want to let them down so I just ran like hell and hoped for the best."
