Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is set to turn to Waterford’s John O'Shea for Wednesday's Champions league qualifier against Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg.
The young centre-half, who will captain the Republic of Ireland U-21s when they play Finland later this month, will get his chance as Rio Ferdinand is almost certain to miss the tie having twisted his ankle during Saturday’s friendly with Boca Juniors.
Ferdinand fell awkwardly as he leapt to avoid goalkeeper Roy Carroll during the first half of the 2-0 win at Old Trafford and was barely able to put any weight on his left leg as he was helped down the tunnel.
Fears of ligament damage were immediately downplayed, although Ferguson has conceded the British record signing is also likely to miss Saturday’s Premiership opener with West Brom.
"The great news is his injury is not as bad as first feared," Ferguson said today.
"It was a bitter blow for the lad to be taken off on his debut, but the news is that the swelling has completely gone, which is good news," Ferguson said.
"I still think he will miss the Wednesday match against the Hungarian team and the West Brom game, but I would hope he would be fit for next week."
O'Shea was used sparingly by Ferguson last season but has made nine appearances for the club and has enjoyed loan spells at Royal Antwerp and Bournemouth.
The 21-year-old slotted in neatly alongside Laurent Blanc on Saturday and, with Wes Brown's recent outings coming in the right-back slot, and is almost certain to be given his chance.
