All seven of the surviving Texas octuplets born last month were breathing on their own after the last of them was taken off a respirator yesterday, officials said.
Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas, said Gorom, a baby girl who underwent abdominal surgery the day after Christmas, was able to breathe naturally like her six siblings.
All the children except Gorom are receiving small amounts of their mother's milk to supplement intravenous feeding, the hospital said in a statement.
The condition of the five girls and two boys was described as critical but stable.
One child was born naturally on December 8th while the rest were delivered by Caesarean section on December 20th. They were up to four months premature and weighed between 11.3 ounces (320 grams) and 28.6 ounces (810 grams).
The smallest, a girl nicknamed Odera, died on December 27th from heart and lung failure.
Doctors have said the babies will be in the hospital at least two months at a cost of about $250,000 each.
The mother, Ms Nkem Chukwu (27), went home last week after nearly three months in the hospital. She and the babies' father, Mr Iyke Louis Udobi (41), are both US citizens from Nigeria.
