The offences are contrary to section 15 of the Act.

Wearing glasses and dressed in a green jumper and grey trousers, Mr Corry remained silent throughout his brief appearance at Limerick District Court.

Garda Monica Reilly gave evidence of arresting the prison officer at Roxboro Garda station shortly after 3pm on the afternoon of Wednesday

Garda Reilly said the 51-year-old made no reply when he was formally charged.

Counsel for the State said there was no objection to bail on condition Mr Corry agreed to surrender his passport and not apply for a new one.

He was also ordered to sign on daily at Killaloe Garda station in Co Clare and to reside at his home address in Scariff.

Judge Aeneas McCarthy granted bail on Mr Corry’s own bond of €500 and an independent surety of €2,500.

The accused man’s brother, Michael Corry, supplied the independent surety.

Michael Corry said he understood that his brother was facing certain charges and that it was a serious matter.

He said he also understood what it meant if his brother failed to turn up in court for his next hearing on April 15th.
