Police in Derry say that one man was arrested for public order offences during scuffles between PSNI officers and protesters as the Olympic torch was carried in relays through the city centre yesterday evening.

The scuffles broke out as the torch was about to be carried across the city’s Peace Bridge.

A group of about 60 had gathered behind the Guildhall before the relay team carrying the Olympic torch had arrived.

Thousands of spectators, many of them visitors to Derry, had lined the route of the relay and clapped and cheered.

The protesters, many of them young children carrying placards alleging police brutality during weekend searches of houses in the Creggan area, then clashed with police officers.
