THE HSE Mid West has issued a warning about an outbreak of mumps with more than half of the 18 cases reported to be among University of Limerick students.

The health scare coincides with a visiting ban at the Midwestern Regional Hospital in Limerick after eight cases of the winter vomiting bug were confirmed.

The HSE has advised all students on the UL campus to ensure that they are protected against the disease, either through having received two doses of the MMR vaccine or having been immunised during the previous outbreak at the university in March 2005.
