THE DUP leader, the Rev Ian Paisley, met the RUC sub divisional commander at Ballymena yesterday to discuss loyalist disturbances in the Co Antrim village at the weekend during which a mob attacked the police and damaged the Catholic church at Harryville.

The Northern Ireland Minister for Education, Mr Tony Worthington, described the events at Harryville in Ballymena as "deeply depressing".

Dr Paisley said the violence did not happen during the parade which involved 50 to 60 bands and members of the band had nothing to do with the trouble.

He said he would be raising the matter with the Police Complaints Commission.

Seven people have been charged with public order offences after the disturbances. They are to appear at a Ballymena court on Thursday, the RUC said. Others questioned about the disturbances have been released on bail.
