Paratroopers may get anonymity

Former British paratroopers could be granted anonymity to testify at the Bloody Sunday inquiry, it was confirmed last night. But if the right to anonymity is not given by the time the inquiry starts in September, then they face being subpoenaed to appear.

The men said last month they would not give evidence following a legal ruling which, they said, suggested their identities would not be protected. But a spokesman for the inquiry rejected this, saying the tribunal ruling clearly indicated that while there would be no blanket anonymity, individuals could apply and their request would be considered.
