Parents across Ireland have been urged to educate themselves about drug misuse and discuss the issue with their teenage children

The call came at the unveiling of a new drug-awareness DVD in Dublin today. Empower: The family guide to understanding drugs in Irelandis a 30-minute long DVD that will be available for free loan from local libraries throughout the country from next week.

Set in Co Tipperary, the DVD tells the story of one teenager's experience with drug misuse and offers advice on the signs of drug addiction and a guide to drug terms and language.

Speaking in Pearse Street Library in Dublin this morning, the Progressive Democrats' Liz O'Donnell said drug misuse is an issue every family should discuss.

"Drug misuse can be a confusing and daunting subject for many parents. We hope this DVD can provide clarity on the topic and give families clear information and advice," she said.

Dr Ide Delargy, director of the Drug Misuse Programme at the Irish College of General Practitioners, also backed the DVD.

"The consequences of substance abuse are dealt with in a realistic and measured way, and I am sure that the issues addressed in this DVD will generate discussion for parents and young people alike," Dr Delargy said.
