FRANCE: Islamic  militants arrested in the Paris suburbs over the last two weeks planned to attack Russian targets and particularly wanted to hit Moscow's embassy in Paris, the French interior ministry said yesterday.

Police investigations showed some of the Islamists had received training in Georgia's Pankisi Gorge, where they met Chechen military chiefs and senior operators from the al- Qaeda network which the US holds responsible for last year's September 11th attacks.

"The group wanted to attack Russian interests, and especially the Russian embassy in Paris," the interior ministry said in a statement, citing one of the people questioned. - (Reuters)
