The cost of on-street car parking in Dublin city centre has increased by 20 cent today.

Parking charges in the yellow zone which runs from Dorset Street on the northside of the city to Ballsbridge on the southside are now €2.90 an hour from Monday to Saturday.

Charges are also going up by 20 cent in the outer red and green zones.

The council says there has been an increase in cars coming into the city centre in recent years with on-street parking spaces almost 90 per cent full on most days.

They say increasing parking charges will discourage commuter parking and leave spaces free for short-term use.
