A member of the Shannon Peace Camp yesterday distanced herself from the damage caused to a US navy aircraft at Shannon Airport on Wednesday morning.

One of the founders of the Peace Camp, Ms Mary Kelly, is in Limerick Prison having been charged with causing criminal damage to the aircraft.

A fellow protester, Ms Tracy Ryan, said yesterday: "This is not going to be a direct action camp and we are taking a non-direct action pledge. We will continue to monitor the US planes going in and out of Shannon."

Ms Ryan said the members of the camp were distressed and surprised when informed of the attack on the aircraft, estimated to have caused €500,000 worth of damage.

Ms Ryan said: "I don't think damaging the aircraft was very helpful in trying to keep the support we have had." Ms Ryan stressed however that Ms Kelly will receive the full support of the camp in her court battle, adding that she was in good spirits in Limerick Prison.

The 23 crew members of the damaged aircraft flew to Sigonella in Italy from Shannon yesterday . They were due originally to take a 15-hour rest in Shannon. US technicians have began repair work which will take one week to complete.
