That ’70s show: throwback aspect to latest collection from Penneys
LEADING THE charge of the new season’s fashions in a blast of colour and print, Penneys has presented key items from its new collection at the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin’s Smithfield.
There were clear references in the show yesterday to the 1970s, a trend that has infected the high street like a virus, for which designer Marc Jacobs can take the rap since his show last September in New York.
It was immediately evident in the flurry of flared trousers, floral jumpsuits and floppy hats, so characteristic of the folksy looks of that decade. Maxi dresses only served to emphasise the silhouette and the longer lengths.
Apart from that, it was a fresh, playful and affordable line-up of summery separates and dresses that came in a variety of lengths.
They ranged from demure Mad Men-type prom numbers to sleeveless Prada-style prints, with midis completing the offer – a difficult length for those without hourglass figures and demanding new proportions from teamed separates like cardigans or jackets.
Noticeable was the almost complete absence of black with the exception of a flirty black-and- white graphic print skirt, easily absorbed into a black wardrobe.
Everything on the racks seemed to be a dizzying mix of stripes, polka dots, ginghams and prints with the occasional injection of tunic tops or white shirts. It takes a sure hand like that of stylist Aishling Farinella to mix and match such a melange but her assembly made unlikely partners come together in wearable ways.
If faded denim jumpsuits, zany over-the-knee striped socks and wedges shouted Oxegen, button- through denim skirts were more everyday. Capri denims, a varsity jacket and striped T-shirt were a winning ensemble, the only missing accessory a jaunty ponytail.
