Pensioners targeted in NI burglaries

Two elderly women have been attacked in their homes during separate aggravated burglaries in Northern Ireland.

Two elderly women have been attacked in their homes during separate aggravated burglaries in Northern Ireland.

Police said they are investigating a break in at a house at Ballyholland Road, Ballynacraig, in Newry last night shortly after 10pm.

A 94-year-old woman was held in her bed by one man while another man ransacked her home during a 20 minute ordeal.

Separately, three men forced their way into a house on the Antrim Road in Crumlin shortly before 8.30pm last night. An 89-year-old woman who lives in the house was assaulted and sustained injuries to her arm.

It is understood the injuries are not life threatening.

A man who discovered the break-in and came to the woman’s aid was threatened and tied up during the ordeal.

Investigators said he was uninjured.

The PSNI said it is unclear at this stage if anything was stolen from either pensioner’s home during the incidents. They have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
