Dublin - Employees at Microsoft Ireland have been told not to receive personal mail at work after six staff working at a Microsoft office in the US were exposed to a letter containing anthrax, writes Jamie Smyth.

Microsoft Ireland, which employs almost 1,800 people in Dublin, has also centralised its mail deliveries to one location and placed additional security personnel at its site.

Other US multinationals in the Republic, including computer chip manufacturer Intel, have also tightened security at their plants in the wake of the anthrax alert.

A letter sent to a Microsoft office in Reno, Nevada, last week tested positive for anthrax contamination although none of the six workers who may have come in contact with it have tested positive. The letter originated from Malaysia.
