Lima - The Peruvian legislature has approved a law withdrawing Peru from the jurisdiction of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights despite criticism that the move could severely limit the appeals process for people jailed on treason charges.

Opposition members of Congress accused President Alberto Fujimori of using the law to bury rights cases against the government as he considered running for an unprecedented third election in 2000.
