A pharmacist was prosecuted yesterday for allowing a member of his staff to sell a painkiller containing Ibuprofen to a customer over the counter while a qualified pharmacist was not present.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland prosecuted Mr Michael McLoughlin, who owns McLoughlin's Pharmacy, at Dunnes Stores Shopping Centre, Headford Road, Galway, for selling 12 Nurofen tablets containing Ibuprofen to a member of the Pharmaceutical Society on November 29th, while a qualified pharmacist was not present.

Judge John Garavan fined Mr McLoughlin £75, plus £250 costs, at Galway District Court yesterday.

The common painkillers may be sold without prescription, but only when a pharmacist is present, in accordance with the Pharmacy Act 1875 to 1977.
