Swimming: American Michael Phelps broke Ian Thorpe's 200 metres freestyle world record to win gold at the world championships in Melbourne today.

Phelps raced to victory in one minute 43.86 seconds, wiping 0.20 seconds off the previous record of 1:44.06 set by Thorpe at the 2001 world championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Holland's Pieter van den Hoogenband finished second and South Korea's Park Tae-hwan was third after winning the 400 freestyle final on Sunday.

Phelps also won gold in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay on Sunday and is chasing an unprecedented eight titles in Melbourne.    The 21-year-old has now won a total of seven individual gold medals at four world championships, equalling Australian Grant Hackett's record.

Shortly afterwards, Natalie Coughlin broke her own world record for 100 metres backstroke. The American won the gold medal in 59.44 seconds to shave 0.14 seconds off the previous record of 59.58 she set in 2002.
