Los Angeles - In one of the largest individual awards ever against the industry, a jury yesterday ordered Philip Morris to pay $3 billion to a 56-year-old cancer patient who accuses the tobacco giant of being responsible for his illness.

The jury, after nine days, also awarded Mr Richard Boeken, a longtime Marlboro "reds" smoker, economic and non-economic damages totalling $5.5 million. He had sought between $100 million and $10 billion damages.
