A pilot whose helicopter went out of control and came down heavily in a field while he was flying a television crew has settled his High Court action.

John McHale (55), a commercial pilot from Griffith Avenue, Dublin, had sued Irish Helicopters, claiming the company failed to provide him with appropriate information on the safe use of the helicopter involved.

He claimed he suffered injury to his back and has ongoing pain as a result of the crash.

Irish Helicopters, with registered offices at Weston Airport, Leixlip, Co Kildare, denied his claims.

The case was due to be heard yesterday by Mr Justice Michael Peart but he was told, following talks between the sides, the matter had been settled.

Senior counsel Martin Giblin, for Mr McHale, said the case would not have been an “ordinary run-of-the-mill” matter had it gone ahead, because it involved a helicopter crash and there would have been a lot of very interesting technical evidence.

He asked for the case to be struck out with an order for costs in favour of Mr McHale.
