A pipe bomb went off outside a house early today as an army bomb disposal unit tried to defuse it.

A pipe bomb went off outside a house early today as an army bomb disposal unit tried to defuse it.

The team were drafted in to deal with the weapon at 12.45am, which was found at the back of the property in the Milltown estate, Ashbourne, Co Meath.

The Defence Forces said no injuries were caused by the small explosion, which happened shortly after 1.30am, as the area had been evacuated.

A spokesman said: ¿There was some damage to the house outside which it was placed.

At the time neither the bomb disposal officer or the robot were next to the Improvised Explosive Device (IED).¿

The remains of the home-made device were passed to gardai at the scene.
