The President of Plaid Cymru, Mr Dafydd Wigley, announced yesterday that he is to stand down as leader of the party and leader of the Plaid Cymru group in the Welsh Assembly for health reasons, Rachel Donnelly writes from London.
Mr Wigley, who has been president of the party since 1991, had heart surgery at the end of last year and his doctors have advised him to reduce his workload. The 10,000 members of Plaid Cymru will elect a new president by a one-member-one-vote ballot at the end of July. Mr Wigley will continue as a member of the Welsh Assembly, but he will step down as a Westminster MP at the next general election.
