Bray, Co Wicklow, Urban District Council has proposed a new Town Centre plan that will accommodate public transport and pedestrians and reduce traffic congestion, according to its developers.

The council said its plan would "bring Bray back to the community" by improving the environment and making the town centre more pedestrian friendly.

"The proposed plan will greatly enhance the streetscape of Bray and has potential to reduce town-centre traffic by 40 per cent. That will make it easier for everyone who needs to, to access the town," said town clerk Ms Catherine Halligan.

"We want to give pedestrians priority, by widening the pavements and improving links between the main street and the seafront. We want to see more buses and bus lanes in the town centre, with priority being given to public transport and pedestrian priority on Quinsboro Road," she added.

Improvements are planned for the off-street car-park at Herbert Road, which the council expects will increase its capacity to 412 cars.

The plan has been backed by the Dublin Transportation Office (DTO), which is currently preparing a submission to be presented to the district council within the next six weeks.

The plan hasn't been costed yet, but Mr Emerson believes it can be implemented without great expense.

A public exhibition of the plan began yesterday and continues today from noon until 5 p.m. at Bray Town Hall.
