Plans to reopen mine rejected

CIare County Council has rejected plans for the reopening of a calcite mine reported to be the largest in these islands

CIare County Council has rejected plans for the reopening of a calcite mine reported to be the largest in these islands. The council has refused planning permission for the £1 million development at Kilbreckan to the Meath-based directors of Clare Calcite. The planning authority told Navan directors the roads leading to the mine and there was also a question of public safety on the road.

There were local objections, the proposal and the Kilbreckan Mine Action Group welcomed the decision. The company rejected the allegations and is considering appealing the decision to An Bord Pleanala.
