Focus Ireland is urging the business community to support its annual "sponsor-a-star" campaign to help raise funds for the homeless this Christmas.

The charity is erecting a Christmas tree at the top of Dublin's Grafton Street, and has suggested that companies should buy advertising space on it rather than send out corporate gifts this year.

Stars, hanging from the tree's branches, can be bought from €1,000 upwards, with a €50,000 price tag on the star at the top of the tree.

Focus Ireland is hoping to raise €250,000 through the scheme, which is now in its third year.

The charity's fundraising manager, Mr Mark Mellet, said: "We're getting great support this year but we still need more. Companies could support us by opting to sponsor a star this year instead of spending money on Christmas cards."
