PSNI REACTION:THE PSNI has defended the decision not to intervene during Monday's Easter Rising commemoration in Derry's City Cemetery, which was addressed by a hooded spokesman for the Real IRA.
A PSNI investigation into the event is taking place.
Dressed in paramilitary attire, the Real IRA spokesman warned of more “executions” of police officers, denied his organisation was in contact with the British and Irish governments, and branded the forthcoming visit to the Republic by Queen Elizabeth as “an insult”.
Defending the police response and the decision not to intervene, Supt Chris Yates said the PSNI had decided on a “low-key operational response to the event”.
The rally, organised by the 32 County Sovereignty Movement and attended by about 200 people, was monitored by a PSNI helicopter.
“An investigation has commenced and I would appeal to anyone who has any information regarding this incident to contact police,” he said.
“Any alleged breaches of criminal law reported to police or coming to our attention will be rigorously and thoroughly investigated. The PSNI work to ensure that all their actions are appropriate, proportionate and lawful.”
Supt Yates accused dissident republicans of “seeking to target those who are at the very forefront of moving communities forward”.
“It is the job of the police service to bring to justice anyone who breaks the law,” he added.
“We will continue to do this objectively and impartially and take a robust stance against all dissident republican terrorist activity,” he said.
