The Army would be used as a back-up, if required, for security at the opening of the Tour de France, the Taoiseach said.
Mr Ahern expressed the hope that there would not be any difficulties relating to gardai providing security at the event.
The Labour leader, Mr Ruairi Quinn, asked if contingency plans had been drawn up and suggested legislation might be required to provide the necessary level of security.
Mr Ahern said there was a long-standing practice whereby the Army could assist the civil power where necessary. He added it did not require a legislative basis.
