The Tanaiste, Ms Harney, yesterday admitted that opinion polls in Cork South Central were disappointing for the Progressive Democrats but denied that a poor performance would herald the collapse of her party. According to a Sunday Independent/IMS poll, PD candidate Mr Peter Kelly is running at just 3 per cent, sharing fifth spot in the poll with Mr Henry Cremin of Sinn Fein.

"It certainly is very disappointing but we never thought this by-election was going to be easy," Ms Harney said. "I think we are now sowing the seeds for the party's renewal and we've shown enough to convince our supporters of that."

Speaking at the party's final election press conference before Friday's vote, Ms Harney revealed the PDs are seeking to "head-hunt right around the country for candidates that are capable of winning local election seats" next year. Recruiting new candidates will be part of the strategy towards boosting the party's recovery, together with its performance in Government. The party will also be boosted by the appointment of a new general secretary and press officer, she said.
