Portumna swept aside the challenge of Birr to claim the All-Ireland club hurling championship with a 3-19 to 3-9 win at Croke Park this afternoon.
Birr had raced out of the blocks, notching two early goals to lay down a marker as the Connacht champions struggled to cope with the high ball dropped in short.
But Portumna have proved to be nothing if not resilient over the past few seasons, weathering the early storm and by the time Andrew Smith pulled a goal back in the 15th minute, the writing was on the wall for Birr.
Joe Canning, as expected, proved a constant thorn in Birr's side displaying a dazzling array of skills and despite having a penalty saved, the youngster helped establish a 1-11 to 2-4 lead at the interval.
A second goal from Smith extended that lead early in the second-half as Portumna, although playing into a strong breeze, underlined their dominance.
Birr hung in gamely but when Damien Hayes sprinted clear of his marker to fire past Brian Mullins for Portumna's third goal there was to be no way back, despite Brian Whelehan scoring a third goal from a long-range free moments later.
