A post-mortem examination has been carried out on the body of a man in his seventieswhich was exhumed by gardaí investigating allegations against a Co Kildare-based nurse.
The exhumation took place at Baltinglass cemetery, Co Wicklow, in theearly hours of this morning.
The body of the man - who died earlier this year - was transferred to Dublinfor examination by deputy State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy, who undertooktoxicology and other tests on the remains. Afterwards, the body was re-interred at Baltinglass.
The female nurse involved in the investigation was recently suspendedfollowing the establishment of an inquiry into the over-prescribing of medicinesto elderly patients at Naas General Hospital, in Co Kildare, between January andJune this year.
It was understood that three cases - two of which resulted in death - arebeing investigated, and that the man exhumed today was a patient at thehospital.
Gardaí were alerted last week and the National Bureau of CriminalInvestigation was called in.
Sources said the results of the tests being carried out today could determinewhether further exhumations were necessary.
The South-Western Area Health Board said the nurse involved had beenworking at the hospital for around six months, and an independent inquiry hadbeen initiated.
