Postal workers are to serve strike notice after a ballot for industrial action was passed by a huge majority.
The action is part of a pay claim by postal staff relating to ongoing work changes. Following a ballot of some 8,000 postal staff, 89.7 per cent voted in favour of industrial action.
A spokeswoman for the Communications Workers Union (CWU) represents the staff, said 85 per cent of postal workers had been balloted.
She said a letter giving two weeks notice was being sent to management. The executive committee of the CWU is meeting this evening to decide on the nature of the industrial action and she said speculation about an all out strike was premature.
The union are annoyed at what they claim is management’s failure to engage in proper negotiations over a restructuring package which will see around 1,200 redundancies at the company.
The union’s general secretary, Mr Con Scanlon, has accused An Post management of acting outside an agreed partnership process.
