A postmortem is to be held on the body of a Russian man who died three days after he was found unconscious in a garda cell.

The man (51) suffered serious head injuries and was found unconscious in a Garda cell in Cork last Friday; he died yesterday.

A Garda Superintendent from outside the division has been appointed to investigate the incident.

The man was arrested on Victoria Cross Road in the city following a report of criminal damage. He was put in a cell at Togher Garda Station at 7.05am, but an hour later he was found unconscious.
