England's Ian Poulter charged into the first round lead at the Volvo Masters with a dazzling eight-under-par 64 in Spain today.
Poulter, Rookie of the Year last season and winner of the Moroccan Open in April, set off in pursuit of the Stg£333,330 top prize with six birdies and an eagle at the 517-yard 16th.
It was good enough for a one-stroke lead over Australian Peter Lonard.
Darren Clarke began with eight successive pars, while Lee Westwood had to eagle the long 12th to be two under and Colin Montgomerie was one under after eight.
