Northern Ireland's longest-running commercial radio station fell silent today after falling victim to an electricity power surge.

Downtown Radio disappeared from the airwaves at around 8.50am on its medium wave, FM and digital frequencies. However, its sister station, Cool FM remained on air.

Engineers were working hard to restore Downtown Radio's signal across Northern Ireland and station bosses were hopeful it would be back on air soon.

The power surge is believed to have originated in Bangor, Co Down, affecting the radio station which is based in Newtownards.
