Premiership leaders Arsenal piled on the misery for Leeds and their beleaguered manager Peter Reid with a 4-1 win at Elland Road this afternoon.

Leeds, second bottom with just eight points to their name, started brightly but were out of the game by half-time as the ruthless Gunners netted three times on the counter-attack.

French ace Thierry Henry grabbed the first on eight minutes after a lightning breakaway started by a long pass from Ashley Cole.

Robert Pires added a second on 17 minutes after Freddie Ljungberg broke down the left and pulled the ball back across the edge of the area.

Henry pounced on a rebound for a third after Dennis Bergkamp's 33rd-minute shot hit a post and Gilberto Silva made it 4-0 five minutes after the break.

Alan Smith diverted a James Milner shot in after 64 minutes and the striker then hit the post moments later but it was too little too late for the home side.

Manchester United and Chelsea ensured things remained tight at the top as they both won again with victories over Portsmouth and Everton respectively.

Champions United overcame plucky Portsmouth 3-0 at Old Trafford with goals from Diego Forlan, Cristiano Ronaldo and Roy Keane.

Pompey gave a good account of themselves but United started to assert themselves late in the first half with Ruud van Nistelrooy clipping the bar and Forlan striking after 37 minutes.

Ronaldo made sure of the points when he came off the bench and curled home a free-kick and Keane added a third late on.

Adrian Mutu continued his fine start to life in a Premiership as his sixth goal of the season accounted for Everton at Goodison Park.

Everton were made to pay for Tomasz Radzinski's failure to convert good chances at the start of each half as Mutu headed in after 49 minutes.

The home side had another good opportunity when Wayne Rooney lobbed over but Chelsea's luck held.

Aston Villa held on for a 1-1 draw with Newcastle at St James' Park despite being down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes.

Gavin McCann was dismissed for a second bookable offence but his team-mates managed to hold out Newcastle without him, Thomas Sorensen even saving an Alan Shearer penalty.

Villa had taken the lead after 11 minutes when Dion Dublin, despite playing in defence, did what he still does best by heading home a corner.

Newcastle levelled just before the interval when Laurent Robert stabbed the ball home after a goalmouth scramble but Sorensen denied Shearer a winner from the spot after Gareth Barry had handled.

Robbie Fowler scored only his fourth goal for Manchester City as Kevin Keegan's side won 2-0 at Southampton.

Former Liverpool forward Fowler struck after just four minutes at St Mary's with a powerful shot from outside the area.

City continued to dominate but did not make the game safe until Paulo Wanchope bagged their second five minutes from time.

Bolton claimed a 1-0 win over Tottenham after superb performance at White Hart Lane.

Jay-Jay Okocha was in outstanding form and was just the width of the crossbar away from scoring three times.

Yet despite dominating the game, the Trotters had to wait until the 73rd minute to claim the goal they deserved through Kevin Nolan.

Wolves were beaten 2-0 by Middlesbrough at the Riverside after goals from Gaizka Mendieta and Juninho.

A dull game finally game to life when Spanish star Mendieta fired home from long range after 73 minutes and Juninho added a second soon after.

Wolves' misery was compounded when Alex Rae was sent off late on.
