A school principal in a provincial town has been suspended pending the outcome of a Garda investigation into allegations of financial impropriety.
The Department of Education confirmed that a Garda investigation was taking place but refused to comment further.
It is understood the investigation relates to large sums - thought to be several thousand pounds - earmarked for the school but possibly used for other purposes.
The principal was suspended several weeks ago and an acting principal has been in position since then. Neither was contactable for comment yesterday.

It is understood the Department of Education and the management body representing the school have met on several occasions to discuss the allegations.
