A private summit of current and former world leaders is due to be held in Dublin next week, it was reported today.
Former US president Mr Bill Clinton and his Russian counterpart Mr Mikhail Gorbachev are reported to be travelling for the meeting at a hotel on Tuesday.
The Sunday Tribunereported that outgoing Colombian president Mr Andres Pastrana would also attend, giving Taoiseach Mr Ahern an opportunity to discuss the detention of three alleged IRA men in Bogota.
It is thought that 50 delegates will be at the 41st annual Salute to Excellence and International Achievement Summit, organised by what the newspaper described as a "wealthy Washington-based academy to introduce young scholars to inspirational individuals".
Among others reported to be attending are Afghanistan's interim leader Mr Hamid Karzai, President Mary McAleese and her predecessor Mrs Mary Robinson and Northern Ireland peace broker US Senator George Mitchell.
The newspaper said the Garda had been making security arrangements for the summit at the Four Seasons Hotel in Ballsbridge, for several months in collaboration with international police and aviation groups and US security services.
A spokesman at the Foreign Office in Dublin confirmed that the summit was being organised by the Washington-based Academy of Achievement.
"There is a very wide ranging invitation list but I do not know who has accepted," the spokesman said.
No one was available from the academy for comment.
