A prominent anti-Shell campaigner has appeared in court on charges relating to the latest protests against the Shell gas pipeline in Co Mayo.

Maura Harrington, of Doohoma, Belmullet, appeared at yesterday’s vacation court sitting in Ballina on charges relating to two incidents on August 1st and 3rd last.

She was charged with dangerous driving, failure to comply with the direction of gardaí and wilful obstruction on August 3rd last at Bellagelly South, Glenamoy.

She was also charged with wilful obstruction and failure to comply with the direction of gardaí on August 1st at Ballinaboy, Barnatra.

Ms Harrington told the court she had been in contact with her solicitor but he was unavailable to attend.

Judge Conal Gibbons remanded Ms Harrington on bail and the case will come before Belmullet District Court on September 12th for mention.

Izzy Ní Ghraidm of Rossport Solidarity Camp also appeared before yesterday’s court.

She was charged with failure to comply with a direction of gardaí and wilful obstruction at Ballinaboy on August 1st last.

She was also remanded on bail to appear before Belmullet court on September 12th.
